Physical wellbeing

Why is physical wellbeing so important?

Good physical health and good mental health are intrinsically linked – where one suffers, the other will usually follow.

So, looking after our physical wellbeing should be a top priority for us all.

Physical activity plays a huge role in enhancing our psychological wellbeing and mental health.

Increasing you activity levels improves:

  • your overall health
  • sleep
  • ability to maintain healthy weight
  • management of stress
  • quality of life

Even small increases in physical activity can contribute to improved overall health and quality of life.

Everyone is different, the trick is to find the right activity for you – making sure it is something you enjoy and is right for your level of fitness, is essential to keeping up with it. Any activity that can be built into your daily routine can add to your physical activity, such as:

  • using the stairs rather than a lift
  • parking a bit further away from your destination
  • going for a walk during your lunch break
  • cleaning and tidying up
  • or even having a dance to a favourite song

Walking and cycling

Increasing how much you walk, or cycle can be an easy way to increase your overall physical activity levels. Walking and cycling have a range of benefits, including:

  • improving mental wellbeing
  • opportunities to enjoy the outdoor environment
  • reducing the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, cancer, obesity and Type 2 diabetes
  • keeping the musculoskeletal system healthy
